Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant global public health challenge, especially in Africa, necessitating the discovery of novel agents. This study addresses this need by exploring the antibacterial properties of an African plant, Enantia chlorantha. Researchers evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of bark extracts, obtained using various polar and non-polar solvents, against six common clinical isolates. They employed the agar well diffusion assay and determined minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations. Findings indicate that the dichloromethane extract of E. chlorantha exhibits the highest antimicrobial activity, particularly against K. pneumoniae. The study reveals the presence of numerous bioactive phytochemical compounds and emphasizes the importance of selecting polar solvents for optimal extraction, thus offering a promising avenue for new treatments.
