‘Echoing Silences’: Ethnicity in post-colonial Zimbabwe, 1980-2007

This article examines ethnicity’s profound impact on post-colonial Zimbabwe (1980-2007). Despite its rare mention in public discourse, ethnicity significantly shapes the country’s economic, social, and political life. The authors argue that serious ethnic polarization persists. This polarization stems from the state’s failure to address the political economy of ethnicity. Colonial legacies and nationalist projects further complicated these dynamics.

Cet article étudie l’impact profond de l’ethnicité au Zimbabwe post-colonial (1980-2007). Malgré sa rare mention dans le discours public, l’ethnicité façonne considérablement la vie économique, sociale et politique du pays. Les auteurs affirment qu’une polarisation ethnique sérieuse persiste. Cette polarisation découle de l’incapacité de l’État à gérer l’économie politique de l’ethnicité. Les héritages coloniaux et les projets nationalistes ont complexifié ces dynamiques.
